Frequently Asked QuestionsWhen should I consider replacing the windows in my home? Several factors will help you determine when it's time to replace the
windows in your home.
Why can't I just buy windows off the shelf at my local home improvement There are windows you can buy off the shelf, but most replacement windows in existing homes will need to be custom fit. There are several factors that will determine how to measure for replacement windows, including what kind of surface they are coming out of , i.e. brick, stucco or wood, and how they were installed in the first place. Why use Advantage Window and Door? What is the average cost to replace a window? There is no really good answer to this question. Every home has a different average window size and each home owner will decide which window manufacturers product he will use. Things like foam filled frames, argon gas filled glass and low E coatings can change the price. We offer free estimates and can easily arrange an appointment for you, by just calling our office. One of our estimators will come to your home and answer your questions, at no cost to you. What do I need to do to prepare for my window installation? You will need to remove any window coverings and move any furniture at least 3 feet away from the window. Do the installers need to come into my home? Yes. While most of the installation is done from the outside, the installers will need to be inside the home to complete the installation. The installers will put tarps on the floor and clean up after themselves How long does it usually take to replace a window? To tear out an average size window and put the replacement unit in on an average job usually takes about 1 hour for each window. However keep in mind that this is an average, there are factors that can change this time estimate. How much lead time is required? Lead time depends on several things. After you've decided to replace your windows and you have signed an agreement, we will come and measure each opening, then the window order is placed, this process usually takes between3 and 4 weeks. During busy times of the year the manufacturing process may take longer, the measuring staff is busier as are the installation crews, all of which can add to lead time. What is a insulated glass unit? An insulated glass unit (IGU) is the sealed glass unit that is inside of the window frame, it consists of two panes with a spacer between and a seal. The vinyl frame has a track the IGU fits into. When the glass in a window breaks the old IGU can be removed from the frame and new one installed, it is not necessary to replace the frame if it has not been damaged. The window unit consist of the frame, the IGU and the screen. What is Low-E? Very simply put Low-E, is very thin coating on one of the inside surfaces of the glass that increases the thermal efficiency of the window. Your windows can benefit from the Low-E coating even if they are not in direct sunlight. What is Argon? Argon is a heavier than air gas that can be used to fill the space (instead of air) between the two panes of glass in an IGU. Argon gas increases the thermal efficiency of the window. What areas do you serve? We have done bids from Fillmore to Evanston and everywhere in between. And there are times when much of the work can be done by phone, e-mail or fax.
